BEWARE!! Halloween Treats are Tricky?

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

This post went out in last week?s newsletter?that you should ALL be subscribed to. ?I mean, it?s delivered directly to your inbox ? talk about convenience! In case you did, for some reason miss it; here?s your chance to catch up! ?ENJOY!

Another year, another October 31st ? that?s right, it?s almost Halloween again.? The candy?s been on sale since mid-July (gotta love early marketing).? So far you?ve been able to stay away from it (hopefully), but in a few days the little ghosts, goblins, Justin Bieber?s and Honey Boo Boo?s will soon be knocking at your door requesting treats. Now, we all know that candy isn?t a health food by any stretch of the imagination.? Consider this for a minute ? people are outraged that some farmers are feeding their cattle the sweet stuff and yet we hand it out and feed it to our kids (and ourselves) without thinking twice.? Um, is it just me or is there something terribly wrong with that??? Okay, but back to the point (I need to work on this focusing thing?), we all know that your house is going to get TP?ed or egged if you hand out pennies or pencils again this year, and that?s just so not cool.? There are lots of non-candy trick-or-treat options ? bouncy balls, raisins, stickers, temporary tattoos, etc., but for most people that just doesn?t register as an option ? so off to Costco to buy the Economy Pack of M&M?s, Snickers, Kit Kat?s, and Milky Way?s all the while knowing things are going to end badly?? (Think ? ELASTIC WAISTBAND).

A new trend that seems to be quite popular is the concept of ?healthy candy? (yeah, that one?s running for oxymoron of the year and is right up there with ?political strategy??).? I?m here to tell you right now ? ?healthy candy? is on the same lines as the ?paleo cookie?.? Yes, things in the package may appear healthier than they really are?? You?ve got the 100% Fruit Snacks (FYI: fruit does not disguise itself as an ?Angry Bird? or a Disney Princess.), sugar free, organic, low fat (yeah, I know), unjunked, fortified, and natural.? Folks, these ain?t your standard Skittles here ? these bad boys have 100% of everything you need AND don?t need?? Regardless of if you hand out a ?souped up? version of Sweet Tarts or the standard Jolly Rancher, the overall story plays out the same, a treat is a treat.

Another ?tricky? tactic that can lead to trouble in a big way is the ?snack? size or ?fun? size phenomenon.? It usually plays out like this ? The bowl is full of candy and you?re ready for the little trick-or-treaters.? While waiting for the doorbell to ring, you tell yourself, ?I?ll just have one of these little Reese?s.?? That?s not a bad thought, one small treat is totally acceptable, unfortunately since the treats are ?fun? size it seems easier to justify two (or six) instead of stopping at just one.? This happens with the kids too.? Think about it.? If you buy a regular sized Snickers bar you?re looking at 270 calories, 14 grams of fat (and we?re not talking the good kind here), 35 grams of carbohydrate and 29 grams of sugar (that?s roughly 7 tsps).? Now let?s say you have the ?fun? size and justify eating 4 or 5 of them (let?s be real here folks, they?re small and we all know that over the course of the evening it?s going to happen?), now you?re facing 320-400 calories, 16-20 grams of funky fat, 42-53 grams of carbs, and 35-42 grams of sugar (that?s between 9-11 tsps).? The damage adds up fairly quickly and if you get the ?assorted bag? or help the kids sample their loot you may not have 5 of the same thing, but mindlessly munching 5 (or more) treats in total, is no stretch of the imagination.

This year, don?t be tricked by the treats. ?Here are some ideas to help keep this Halloween from becoming a ?sugar induced nightmare?.

Having Trick-or-Treaters stop at your house?

  • Give out ?healthy? or non-food treats to avoid the temptation of having a bowl of treats in the house.? Pencils, stickers, crayons, temporary tattoos, bouncy balls, etc., all make great options!
  • Choose to give out candy that you don?t really like ? if you?re a chocolate lover give non-chocolate treats.? This will help you avoid the lure of the candy bowl.
  • Alternately, choose to ?not be home? or don?t answer the door and avoid the scene all together.

Um, yeah, but I?ve got kids??

If Halloween is going to happen regardless of your wishes there are still ways to minimize the damage.

  • Arrange a ?Healthy Halloween? party for your little goblins.? Bob for apples, paint or carve pumpkins, do face painting, and offer scary, but good for you treats.
    • Cauliflower brains.
    • Hard boiled eggs, grapes, or olives ? eyeballs.
    • Carrot fingers.
    • Raisin bugs.
    • Chocolate covered bacon snakes.
    • Spaghetti squash guts.
    • Use your imagination to create a ?tasting lab?.
    • Get together with friends and neighbors ? agree to give out non-candy treats.? Map out Trick-or-Treat stops to these places and avoid a sack full of sugar.
    • If you do end up with a bunch of creepy candy encourage your child to ?sell it? back to you or an area dentist office for money or prizes more lucrative than licorice and lollipops!

Seriously, no candy on Halloween???

I know it just doesn?t seem fair.? If your kids (or you) insist that it?s not Halloween without candy, go ahead and indulge in a piece or two.? Choose wisely and really enjoy only your very favorites.? Don?t buy bags and have it in the house for the entire month. When the holiday is over, clean it out!? This Halloween doesn?t have to result in a ?candy coma?? just be tricky with your treats!

Happy Halloween!!

Yelp's new pictureheavy menus give you a better look at that Baby Back Rib Tickler

Needless to say, we're all well aware of Yelp's popularity amongst people who love a thing or two about visiting restaurants and, in turn, eating some good ol' food. And while the service could be considered relatively great as is, it never hurts to see a few new features added here and there -- especially one as useful as the new "Explore the Menu," which is made possible by everyday users like yourself. The newfangled menu system will allow folks to upload pictures of any grub item they've tried at frequented restaurants, making it easier for future goers to have a slight idea of what to expect should they be interested in trying a particular dish from one of the many places listed within Yelp. The novel menu pages will be rolling out to business pages today in the US, with Yelp noting that this will be the "first time ever" it's simultaneously launching a fresh service across its OG site, mobile website and applications.

Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

Sugar-Free Diet Plan For HealthExcess sugar consumption is often the reason for several health conditions such as obesity and heart disease. Refined sugars are known to be fast-digesting carbohydrates, which are converted quickly to fat; whereas, complex carbohydrates digest slowly and provide you with a consistent source of energy. Therefore, it is important that you limit the amount of sugar in your diet. Given below is an effective sugar free diet plan.

Sugar-Free Diet Plan

Include Vegetables

Vegetables are excellent for those who suffer from high blood sugar as they are sugar-free. They possess high amounts of complex carbohydrates and fibre, which are beneficial for health. It is advisable that you cook vegetables at home and avoid purchasing packaged food products as they often contain added sugars.

Sugar-Free Diet Plan

Vegetables that are sugar-free include spinach, kale, collard greens, tomato, onion, asparagus, broccoli and yam. It is advisable that you include vegetables at every meal as they also contain high amounts of fibre and water, thereby preventing binge eating.

Include Meat and Dairy Products

Meat is considered an excellent food for those who want to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet. This is because meat possesses no refined sugar and provides you with the essential amino acids as well as vitamins and minerals required for good health.

Chicken breast, fish, lean beef and turkey are excellent sources of animal protein that are sugar-free. Dairy products are also sugar-free and good for individuals suffering from diabetes. However, it is important that you purchase only unflavoured dairy products, which do not contain any added sugar.

Best dairy products that do contain refined sugars include yogurt, cottage cheese and milk. You could also add berries or any other fruit to yogurt for added flavour.

Include Fruits and Whole Grains

Fruits are one of the best foods for those suffering from high blood sugar as they do not contain any added sugar. Fruits are known to possess complex carbohydrates, which digest very slowly and are good for diabetics. Fruits that do not contain refined sugar include blueberries, grapes, kiwi, raspberries, strawberries, banana, mango and apricots.

Diet Plan For Health

You should avoid purchasing packaged fruit juices as they contain high amounts of added sugars. Instead, you should drink fruit juice prepared at home by juicing the whole fruit itself. Whole grains are also considered sugar-free and contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates.

In addition to complex carbohydrates, whole grains also possess good amounts of fibre, which help in digestion. Sugar-free whole grains include oats, bran, wheat, brown rice and millet.

Include Legumes

Legumes are considered excellent for those on a sugar-free diet. This is due to the fact that legumes possess negligible amounts of refined sugar. In addition to that, they contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates and fibre, which help in regulating the levels of blood sugar and promoting smooth digestion.

Common examples of sugar-free legumes include lima beans, pinto beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas and kidney beans. If you experience bloating because of eating legumes, you should soak boiled beans in cold water for a few seconds and drop them in hot water for a few seconds.

Breast-cancer checks save lives despite over diagnosis | Yahoo ...

LONDON (Reuters) - Breast-cancer screening saves lives even though it also picks up cases in some women that would never have caused them a problem, according to a review published in The Lancet medical journal.

The independent review, commissioned by the charity Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and Britain's Department of Health, follows fierce international debate about the benefits of routine screening and recent research that has argued it does more harm than good.

"This has become an area of high controversy," said Sir Mike Richards, the Department of Health's National Cancer Director and one of the sponsors of the review.

Critics of routine screening argue that women can be subjected to unnecessary surgery, radiotherapy and medication to treat cancers that would have posed them no risk.

Harpal Kumar, chief executive of CRUK, acknowledged the shortcomings of screening but argued that until testing for breast cancer becomes more sophisticated, regular monitoring is the best option.

"Screening remains one of the best ways to spot the very early signs of breast cancer, at a stage when treatment is most likely to be successful," he said.

"Yet, as the review shows, some cancers will be diagnosed and treated that would never have caused any harm."

A panel of experts led by University College London professor Sir Michael Marmot concluded that screening prevents about 1,300 deaths per year in Britain but can also lead to about 4,000 women having treatment for a condition that would never have troubled them.

This means that for every death that is prevented, three women are over-diagnosed.

The review panel called for improved information, in health leaflets for instance, to give women a clearer picture of both the benefits and potential harms before they go for a mammogram.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in Britain, affecting one in eight at some point in their lives. The country's screening program invites women aged 50 to 70 for a mammogram every three years and this is being expanded to ages 47 and 73.

Earlier diagnosis and better treatments have improved the survival rate to 77 percent in 2007 from 41 percent in 1971, according to CRUK.

The conclusions of the review are based on analysis of 11 trials that all took place more than 20 years ago, which assessed whether screening resulted in fewer deaths due to the disease, compared to when no screening takes place.

The panel acknowledged the studies had limitations, not least because of their age, but decided the evidence was strong enough to conclude that women invited for screening have a relative risk of dying from breast cancer that is 20 percent less than those who are not invited.

Harpal Kumar said research is under way that could lead to more sophisticated tests that distinguish aggressive cancers from those that are not.

This, coupled with a better understanding of genetic predisposition and lifestyle factors that play a role in breast cancer, could mean more finely targeted screening and less over-diagnosis.

"Until this is possible, we'd recommend women who have had something unusual picked up through screening to seek full advice and discuss all possible options with their breast cancer specialist team," he said.

Honda CBX1000 RAW Cafe Racer ~ Return of the Cafe Racers

Over the last few years I've seen some amazing things happen in the world of custom motorcycle building, but the thing that excites me most is the growing trend of using "old" fabrication techniques. Rather than relying on machines to do the hard work for them handfuls of builders are adopting traditional techniques using?basic tools and their bare hands?to turn raw materials into functional components.

Vaughan Ryan is a trained?coach-builder?and?panel beater?who works as a lecturer in Automotive collision repair. His skills were honed during an?apprenticeship?at Classic Autocraft in Sydney, repairing, restoring and recreating exotic race and road cars.?Under the guidance of several Spanish master craftsmen he developed?skills in hand forming and fabricating sheet metal/alloy as well as a passion for automotive design. His most recent project is this bike, a Honda CBX1000 he has temporarily named RAW.

Here's what Vaughn had to say about the development of RAW so far...

"This design was based on the idea of a modern factory prototype CBX Caf? Racer. It's a bike that I wish Honda had built as a road going tribute to their multi-cylindered racers of the sixties. I?ve incorporated into the design many different inspirations, including ideas from my working life and any other sources of inspiration. These inspirations include art deco designs, WWII aircraft and historical race cars & bikes."

"Of equal importance to its aesthetics was the practicality and usability of the bike (I hate building trailer queens). I fit new suspension, brakes, wheels & electronics so the bike has modern benchmarked standards of components with old school cool. This isn?t the first bike or CBX I?ve done, the previous CBX was a Mike Hailwood replica constructed for a customer. That CBX is now on permanent display out at Western?s motorcycles in Penrith (It?s a trailer queen & never gets used). That bike planted the seed for this build 8 years ago and I simply needed the right time in my life and the right donor bike to start this build. At the moment this bike?s nickname is RAW."

"The major challenge with the CBX was turning the design in my mind into reality without losing sight or altering my original ideas, I could have taken a much easier and quicker path but I couldn?t live with the end product. My goal was to have the bike ready for its first major test ride in the Ton Up Rockers Ride in Sydney which I?achieved."

"The bike will still be undergoing design refinements over the summer of 2012/13 and around April the bike will be pulled apart then plated, painted, lock wired and polished. My design goal was to construct a motorcycle with clean uncluttered lines, aggressive looks and a sound to match. Too often bikes I?ve owned or ridden have left me wanting in one way or another, with RAW this won't be the case."

With Vaughans build story in mind take a look at the list of bodywork and engine modifications he's completed on the bike to date. It's an ecclectic mix of?standard, fabricated, new and 2nd hand parts which have come together to create his CBX vision.
  • Frame de tabbed and gusseted
  • Swing arm widened & braced with oval section steel tubing
  • Dash, tank, rear seat unit, seat (upholstered by hytone trimming), seat base, rear guard, rear brake caliper mount, foot rest mounts, adjustable linkages, & various bracing, brackets, mounts & machining mostly by the owner or thanks to friends (George Rimi ?bodywork? & Hugh Johnson ?machining? )
  • Front forks, lower triple clamps, front wheel & brakes Ducati 1098R
  • Upper triple clamp billet machined & steering stem adaptor (Costin motorcycle engineering)
  • Foot rests, levers and grips by tarrozzi or domino
  • Electronic ignition paired with can bus completes the new wiring loom and elimination of fuses performed by Julian Lopez
  • Led dash lights and switch blocks supplied by Deus ex machine
  • Handlebars by speedymoto (Gowanaloch?s)
  • Fuel taps & lines supplied by Gowanaloch?s
  • Headlight & mounting brackets supplied by MCA (new handmade sheet alloy mounts & mini fairing will be made)
  • Rear wheel & caliper Ducati 999
  • Exhaust made by pipemaster, sounds rawsome! (Thanks Peter) re-bent and shortened by the owner

How to Fit Workouts into your Schedule? Health and Fitness

Are you swamped with family, work and life responsibilities that are preventing you from working out? Are you missing your fitness goals due to the lack of time? Do you often make exercise plans only to abandon them within a week? If your answer is ?yes? to any of these questions, then here is some good news for you. Experts contend that the duration and place of workouts is not important. This means that you can gain the same benefits from three 10 minute sessions as you can from half an hour of dedicated gym session. The key here is to make minor tweaks to your routine so that you can fit these smaller sessions into your daily schedule. Working out in a way that maximizes the benefits without disrupting your schedule is the key to success. Here are some easy ways to do it.

Plan your sessions

You need to plan in advance if you want your workout routines to be effective. You are more likely to miss workouts if you do not have a plan in place. Record all your weekly obligations, appointments with doctor, deadlines to meet and projects to complete in a journal and plan your workouts around them. You could plan a small session in the morning, one during your lunch break and one after dinner.

Work out at work

If you decide to split your workout into shorter sessions, then you have to make every break count. Go for a short walk around the office block during your lunch break. If your office has a gym, make use of it to fit in a short workout after office hours.

Work out at home

Not having the time to hit the gym regularly is not an excuse to not exercise. There are plenty of ways to workout from the comforts of your home. You can dance around to a music video for 10 minutes or jog on the spot for ten minutes while you watch TV. You can also do some cleaning around the house during weekends or run errands on foot.

Resolve to be Ready for Floods and Severe Weather

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) encourages everyone to be ready to take action and prepare for emergencies. You can start by taking these simple steps:

? Be informed. Know the hazards and risks in your area.
? Make a family emergency plan, so you know how you would communicate with and find your loved ones if and when a disaster hits.
? Build an emergency supply kit-both at home and in the car- that includes water, food and first aid supplies to help you survive if you lose power or get stranded in your car.
? Get involved- Be an advocate and educator for safety and emergency preparedness within your community.Emergencies can range from inconvenience to devastation, but you can resolve not to be a victim of an emergency or disaster and take steps to minimize the impact on you, your family and your businesses.

To help everyone to take these steps to get prepared, the City of Albany Planning and Development Services Department has organized a Flood and Severe Weather Preparedness Fair.

It will be held on Saturday, November 3rd, from 10 am to 4 pm. Indoor exhibits will be at the Thronateeska Science Museum, 100 W. Roosevelt Ave., and outdoor exhibits will be at the RiverQuarium Parking Lot. Admission is free. This fair is a component of the City of Albany?s and Dougherty County?s public outreach in regard to flood information and preparedness. We have federal, state, regional, county and city public agencies and area-wide organizations participating, including:

The National Weather Service, Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, GA EPD Office ofFloodplain Management, GA Dept of Public Health Environmental Health Section, Dougherty County Public Works, City of Albany Public Works, Police Dept., Planning and Development Services, and Emergency Management Agency, Albany Dougherty Search and Rescue Squad, Red Cross Flint River Chapter, GA Wing Civil Air Patrol, Thronateeska Heritage Center, RiverQuarium, VOAD, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Albany Dougherty Greenspace Committee, Albany Humane Society, and a number of vendors who can help you prepare for flooding and severe weather.

There will be indoor and outdoor exhibits on flooding and severe weather information and preparedness, 3-day kit supply lists and examples, exhibits on the history of flooding in the Albany area, including the WALB coverage of the 1994 flood, multi-media and interactive exhibits, emergency vehicles and mobile command units, and CodeRED enrollment.
There will also be Albany and Dougherty County flood insurance rate maps and GIS mapping for you to see where your property is in relation to the different flood hazard zones. Generalinformation on flood insurance and flood hazard zones will also be available. The NationalWeather Service can show you how to program your severe weather radio.
Do you remember the 1994 flood? How did it affect you and your family? The Archives Department of the Thronateeska Heritage Center will be conducting an oral history project at the fair to document your memories of past floods. You may sign up at their booth to be video or audio recorded.

A scavenger hunt will take you from the science museum exhibits to the path to Riverfront Park on the Flint River and up to the RiverQuarium Plaza and parking lot, where the emergency vehicles and mobile command units will be parked.

Report of China leader's family wealth may hurt image

    China Daily via Reuters, file

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao shakes hands with local workers in earthquake-hit Mianzhu, Sichuan province in this Jan. 25, 2009 file photo.

    By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

BEIJING ? When news broke earlier this year that the family of disgraced Chongqing party boss, Bo Xilai, had amassed $160 million in ill-gotten earnings, the story was seen as a proverbial pin in the balloon China?s ruling Communist Party has long floated to its people about its leadership.

In China the storyline went something like this: local-level officials could be and have been corrupted. But China?s highest leaders were incorruptible, pious men who were sympathetic to the plight of the country?s citizenry.

Bo?s corruption and the transgressions of his inner circle have been very publicly renounced by the Communist Party. His wife, Gu Kailai, was found guilty of the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood while his former deputy police chief, Wang Lijun, was jailed and held up as a traitor after his now infamous flight to the American Consulate in Chengdu this past winter.

News Friday that Bo had been stripped of his last party title appears to pave the way for a convenient resolution of the scandal before a critical once-in-a-decade leadership changeover on Nov. 8 at the 18th Communist Party Congress.

But the revelation in Friday?s New York Times that the family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao controlled assets of at least $2.7 billion dollars posed a grave threat to the Party?s preferred narrative of being the honest broker that brings prosperity to all.

NYT report: China leader Wen Jiabao's family has amassed billions in assets since '98

So much so that Beijing was forced Friday to kick the censorship gears up a notch, blocking the English- and Chinese-language websites of the New York Times, blacking out mentions of the story on independent cable news channels carried in China, and censoring the names of Wen?s family and other mentions of the story on China?s Internet. ????

At a Foreign Ministry briefing Friday, a spokesman gruffly stated that the Times? report "blackens China's name and has ulterior motives." When asked why the paper?s website was being censored, he said, "China manages the Internet in accordance with laws and rules."

One piece of information not censored, however is a report released Thursday by the research group, Global Financial Integrity, which estimated $3.7 trillion dollars had been pilfered and smuggled out of China from 2000 through 2011.

The report also estimated that $472 billion -- or 8.3 percent of China?s 2011 gross domestic product -- had been stolen last year alone.

Just how guilty Wen is in his family?s nationwide money grab is up for debate. As the Times? report noted, a 2007 diplomatic cable published by Wikileaks quoted an executive who noted that the premier was aware of his family?s lucrative business ventures: ?Wen is disgusted with his family's activities, but is either unable or unwilling to curtail them."

Wen?s failure to reign in his family?s financial activities threatens to undermine the carefully scripted public persona he has cultivated over the years.

    AFP - Getty Images

A click-through history of modern relations between the United States and China.

Nicknamed ?Grandpa Wen? by state media, the premier has relished opportunities to be photographed connecting with members of rural communities and blue-collar workers. During the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, he was a near-daily presence in news reports about the disaster and government rescue and recovery efforts.

He has also been dogged in his calls for economic reform and greater income equality. At this year?s National People?s Congress, during what was likely his last major press conference in a 45-year-long political career, Wen called for reform.

?Even with a single breath left, I am ready to dedicate myself fully to the cause of China?s reform,? he was quoted as saying.

Although Wen was speaking months before the release of the Times piece, he still apparently felt the need to address whispers about relatives trading on the family name. ?I have never pursued personal gain,? declared Wen, before adding, ?History will have the final say.?

Communist Party officials hope to control the writing of history. But the institution is starting to feel the strain of having to push an ever heavier stone uphill. The Internet has made information more widely available than ever before on the mainland; what censors just 10 years ago could make disappear ? sometimes literally -- has become more problematic today.

Still, while completely squashing a story in China seems to no longer be possible, it may not be Beijing?s intention or even in its best interest to stifle information. Some Chinese have found ways to circumvent the Great Firewall, while millions have gone abroad, where they have been exposed to the world beyond. Allowing them the safety valve of relatively free information does not pose an immediate threat to Party rule for now.

That?s because the vast majority of China?s population appears to be apolitical, disinterested in or unwilling to engage in any meaningful political discourse. This situation is changing, quickly at times.

For now, however, the censorship of unpalatable stories is an effective albeit cumbersome tool for the Party to wield.

As for the New York Times, its fate in China looks dim. Just two months ago, Bloomberg ran a similar story that showed how the family of China?s likely future president, Xi Jinping, had also accumulated a vast business fortune ? though unlike Wen?s kin, Xi?s immediate family did not appear to be reaping the same economic benefits.

Bloomberg?s website has since been blocked on the mainland.?

No Tour de France winner for 1999-2005, cycling union says

BERNE (Reuters) - Seven successive Tour de France races from 1999-2005 were officially declared without winners on Friday after the International Cycling Union (UCI) decided nobody would replace the disgraced Lance Armstrong as champion.

The decision, supported by Tour organizers, was widely expected given that so many riders finishing behind Armstrong, who was stripped of his titles and banned from the sport for life on Monday, have also been associated with doping offences.

The sport's governing body also called on the American and other disgraced riders to return prize money they had received and said it would set up a "fully independent external commission" to investigate allegations made against it over the Armstrong affair.

Armstrong was formally stripped of his seven titles on Monday when the UCI ratified the United States Anti-Doping Agency's decision to ban the 41-year-old Texan for life and nullify his results from August 1998 onward.

"The management committee decided not to award victories to any other rider or upgrade other placings in any of the affected events," the UCI said in a statement following a meeting at a Geneva hotel.

"The committee also called on Armstrong and all other affected riders to return the prize money they had received," the statement added.

    ULLRICH INDIFFERENT

Germany's Jan Ullrich finished runner-up to Armstrong three times in the Tour de France but said two months ago he was indifferent as to whether he was handed the titles.

"I've ended my career and I have always said that I'm proud of my second places," Ullrich, second in 2000, 2001 and 2003, said in August. "It doesn't really bother me that much."

Ullrich, Tour champion in 1997, was himself found guilty of doping by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in February, in relation to the Operation Puerto blood-doping scandal that engulfed cycling six years ago.

CAS annulled his results from 2005 until his retirement two years later.

The other riders to finish second to Armstrong were Alex Zuelle of Switzerland (1999), Joseba Beloki of Spain (2002), German Andreas Kloeden (2004) and Italian Ivan Basso (2005).

Zuelle was part of the Festina team thrown out of the 1998 Tour de France after team manager Bruno Roussel confessed the existence of "an organized doping system."

Basso was banned for two years in 2007 for his involvement in Spain's Operation Puerto scandal.

    DARK PERIOD

In its statement, the UCI said it "acknowledged that a cloud of suspicion would remain hanging over this dark period - but that while this might appear harsh for those who rode clean, they would understand there was little honor to be gained in reallocating places."

It added that part of the new commission's remit would be to find ways to ensure anyone caught doping would no longer be able to take part in the sport, even as a non-rider in a team.

The UCI will announce on November 5 which independent sports body would nominate the members of the commission, with the appointments to follow as soon as possible. It wanted recommendations published by June 1 next year.

The UCI also announced it was suspending legal action against journalist Paul Kimmage pending the findings of the commission.

Former professional rider Kimmage had alleged the UCI covered up a suspicious Armstrong test, something the governing body denies.

USADA published a report into Armstrong on October 10 which said he had been involved in the "most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen".

Armstrong, who has always denied doping, had previously declined to contest the charges, prompting USADA to propose his punishment pending confirmation from the UCI which came on Monday.

Former Armstrong team mates at his U.S. Postal and Discovery Channel outfits, where he won his Tour titles, testified against him and themselves and were given reduced bans by the American authorities.

"UCI is determined to turn around this painful episode in the history of our sport. We will take whatever actions are deemed necessary by the independent commission and we will put cycling back on track," said UCI President Pat McQuaid.

"Today, cycling is a completely different sport from what it was in the period 1998-2005. Riders are now subject to the most innovative and effective anti-doping procedures and regulations in sport.

"Nevertheless, we have listened to the world's reaction to the Lance Armstrong affair and have taken these additional decisive steps in response to the grave concerns raised."

In Medusa's Gaze and Vampire's Bite: The Science of Monsters, science journalist Matt Kaplan writes of real-life zombies in Haiti, poisoned by a witch's brew of pufferfish and tree frogs, and discusses how rabies infection could explain the vampire's aversion to garlic, water and sunlight.

5 Ways Sex Makes Us Smarter
Exercise your brain cells with some sexual activity.

Sex on the brain just might make you a genius.

Here's one major reason I studied communications as an undergraduate and not the sciences: Research seems to always contradict itself.

Of course, the fact that I find science impossibly difficulty is at the top of the list, but still. It seems just yesterday I was reading that just the sight of a sexy woman can make even the brightest man lose 50 IQ points. Today, however, I'm reporting that sex can actually make you smarter.

Yes, researchers at the University of Amsterdam are all about the benefits of a little bit of bump and grind. Sure, a pair of big boobs may make a man forget his name, but maybe the art of doing it is actually a cure?

Here are five ways sex can boost your spirits ? and your brain cells.

    1. Mental Capacity. In the most recent University of Amsterdam study, participants who thought about sex performed better on critical thinking problems. Perhaps this is why men are constantly thinking with their heads rather than their brains (ha! Pun).

    2. Happiness. Let's start calling semen happy juice, because a SUNY Albany study found it has mood-altering chemicals such as oxytocin.

    3. Stress Relief. Careers, kids, bills, replacement refs in the NFL ? everything causes stress. But you know what boosts it? Oxytocin. There's that magical word again! The chemical kicks in 20 seconds after a kiss, so just imagine the benefits of a full romp in the sheets.

    4. Self Esteem. Sex! It feels good! And when good feelings are abound, self-esteem shoots through the roof. Though I'm no scientist (see above), I'd imagine high self-esteem has some pretty positive effects on our day-to-day functioning.

    5. Sleep. Hey, here's that dang oxytocin word again. Aside from lifting spirits and relieving stress, it apparently promotes sleep. A well-rested lady or gent is a smarter one, yes?

Weather forecasts boost UK utility traders' hopes for profits

LONDON (Reuters) - Forecasts for unusual weather conditions in Britain this winter are boosting utility traders' hopes of generating bumper profits just before they close their 2012 trading books.

The winter heating season began October 1 with temperatures below the seasonal norm, and mid-term weather forecasts suggest that relatively cold conditions will continue into early November, before mild and windy weather dominates the rest of winter.

"A cold start to the winter season followed by a mild peak winter season gives us the opportunity to sell our production at high prices before we short the market towards the end of the year, when mild and windy weather takes demand out of the system," a power trader with a utility said.

"It would be a nice lift for our trading books before Christmas," he added.

The season's cold start has already lifted gas prices. Wholesale spot gas prices have risen around 15 percent since the beginning of the month, and forward prices for delivery next summer have gained 5 percent.

Retail household prices have also been rising despite the UK's sluggish economic recovery.

"In recent weeks, colder-than-average realized (and forecast) weather has acted as a catalyst for price increases, as the market shifts focus to these tightening fundamentals (and) we believe European prices need to rise further to balance the market," Goldman Sachs said in a research note this week.

With the recent gains, power and gas prices have broken out of a trading range since February that has made it difficult for traders to make profits.

"The cool start to the winter heating season has been a very welcome change and allows us to sell to a market with heightened demand at decent prices, lifting our end-year results," a gas trader said.

The more common weather pattern for a British winter consists of a mild start followed by colder weather in December and January.

"When this happens, we (utilities) don't make as much profits from high demand early on in the season, and we can be caught short of production later on in winter when it gets really cold, forcing us to buy power and gas on the spot market at high prices to meet customer demand," the power trader said.

Shorting a market means taking an option to buy a product at a later point, making a bet that prices will drop. The trader usually borrows a product from a broker at a certain price and hopes to buy it later at a lower value.

Energy specialists Weather Services International (WSI) said earlier this week they expected to see unusually mild, wet and windy conditions in western Europe between November and January.

The U.S.-based company predicted that a stretch of cold weather was likely in the first half of November across much of Europe but that conditions would become milder after that.

Meteorologists at Thomson Reuters Point Carbon have said they expect temperatures slightly below the seasonal average for early November but that unsettled and wet weather would dominate the rest of winter, with temperatures near normal.
