The Sisters of St. Joseph in Peterborough, London, Hamilton and Pembroke announce merger

Peterborough?s Sisters of St. Joseph are about to become part of a bigger congregation as they merge with Sisters of St. Joseph congregations in London, Hamilton and Pembroke.

?We believe we can accomplish more for our mission, our beliefs and what we stand for, by doing this,? said Sister Joan Driscoll of the Peterborough congregation.

The 80 nuns in Peterborough will become part of a 300-strong united order, she said.

?For us to come together like this, it can only strengthen us,? Driscoll said.

The Sisters of St. Joseph has ministries in Peru and Africa that require help from their sisters in Ontario, she said, and streamlining things by having a single, cohesive leadership frees up people, time and resources to offer more assistance when necessary.

Details on how that leadership will work have not been finalized.

?I expect that there will be some part of it at each (of the four cities),? Driscoll said.

The four congregations will formally merge next week, beginning Sunday, in Markham, where a special meeting will be held. A five-member leadership team will be elected and decisions will be made about how the new combined group will be governed.

?We?ll make a directional statement that will make everything clear,? Driscoll said.

The Sisters of St. Joseph were founded in France in 1650, and has about 14,000 members worldwide. The Peterborough branch was founded in 1890 and currently operates the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse retirement residence on Monaghan Rd.

The sisters also carry out community work in Peterborough, Northumberland and the Kawarthas.
