Removing complexity layers from the universe's creation

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Understanding complexity in the early universe may require combining simpler models to interpret cosmological observations. Complicated statistical behavior observed in complex systems such as early universe can often be understood if it is broken down into simpler ones. Physicists have just published results pertaining to theoretical predictions of such cosmological systems? dynamics.

Apple reportedly beefing up in-house voice team in Boston, hopefully for a better Siri regardless of Nuance

Apple reportedly beefing up in-house voice team in Boston, hopefully for a better Siri regardless of Nuance

Apple has reportedly put together a team of voice parsing specialists in Boston, including former Nuance employees, which has led to some speculation that Apple is looking to roll their own engine for Siri. Google did this from the beginning with Google Now, and the power and flexibility that gave them is often thought to be one of the reasons for it being better, faster, and more localized than Apple's Nuance relationship allows. According to Xcomomy:

Fittingly, the current Boston-area Apple speech team all once worked at VoiceSignal Technologies, a speech software company that was purchased for $293 million by Burlington, MA-based Nuance in 2007.

That includes Gunnar Evermann, Larry Gillick, and Don McAllastar, and notably Apple is apparently letting them all stay in Boston instead of relocating them to HQ in Cupertino.

Architecturally, Apple could certainly replace Nuance with their own voice parsing engine. Practically, Nuance owns so many patents in the area, and is so insanely, obliterating-ly litigious about them, that it could be annoying and expensive for Apple to roll their own. In other words, Nuance's practice of buying, suing - or both - competitors out of the space makes their ingestion or removal painful. Of course, Apple has so much money, they can suck up a lot of pain if they choose to.

The alternative is that this team, in Boston, where Nuance is, is working on making Siri work better with the existing Nuance engine. Or, perhaps both.

Either way, Google is far ahead in this area, and with natural language and voice a critical part of the future of human interface, it's something Apple has to be paying attention to, and putting considerable resources behind.

Looks like they're doing that. Hopefully we'll see the results in device-side processing, and better, faster, more reliable querying. I mean, how's Siri working for you lately?

'Daria' is finally back ? in a fake trailer

Pop culture

La la la la la! MTV's "Daria" is back! Sort of. OK, not really.

It's been 12 years since the animated MTV show featuring whip-smart and cynical high-schooler Daria Morgendorffer went off the air, and still there has been no attempt at a big-screen film. (Meanwhile, idiots "Beavis and Butt-Head" went Hollywood with a full-length movie in 1996, and then came back on MTV after a few years off the air.)

And now, College Humor is reminding fans of that unfortunate fact with a fake "Daria" movie trailer. Two years ago, MTV shared a dream cast for a potential film, putting Aubrey Plaza in the title role. The comedy site went with that, and good thing they did. The "Parks and Recreation" star, already known for her deadpan style of comedy, nails Daria's tone and attitude. The writing and the rest of the casting is spot-on as well, with the fake trailer successfully capturing the feel of the animated show.

In the College Humor video, Daria returns to hometown Lawndale for her high-school reunion, and naturally, she is not enthused. Like Daria, most of the characters have not changed: Baby sister Quinn is still a little diva obsessed with appearances; BFF Jane still sports her sharp bob ? and a Baby Bjorn (who did she marry and procreate with?); dad Jake is still a spaz; mom Helen still gives good advice; and her high-school classmates are as shallow and stupid as ever.

And yes, Daria's love interest, slacker Trent, is around, as is his band, Mystik Spiral. But his dreamy good looks? Not so much.

After this pitch-perfect video, if a movie doesn't get made with Plaza in the starring role, it'll be proof that we do indeed live in a sick, sad world.

Galpin Ford GTR1 to bow at Pebble Beach With 1,000 HP

galpin-ford-gtr

Galpin Auto Sports (GAS) has announced that it will head to this year?s Pebble Beach Concours d?Eleganace event with a 1,000-hp?Ford GTR1.

Based on the Ford GT, the GTR1 is Galpin?s ?interpretation of what the GT may have looked and performed like had it continued its evolution.? The 1,000-hp machine will debut at the Quail Lodge and GAS announced that the GTR1 will be produced but in ?extremely limited? quantities. GAS is probably using the event to gauge consumer interest on its highly-customized vehicle.

The GTR1 will be powered by a twin-turbo 5.4-liter V8 and will have a top speed of 225 mph. The body has been handcrafted from aluminum and has been widened five inches compared to the stock Ford GT. Other modifications include 20-inch wheels, Pirelli P-Zero tires, six-piston brakes with carbon rotors, jeweled headlights and taillights, and carbon fiber accents.

Inside, there?s a machined aluminum instrument cluster, a McIntosh stereo, leather-trimmed seats, dash, door panels, and headliner. Galpin also announced that buyers will have a choice between aluminum or carbon fiber bodies.

Ted Cruz wants to be president.... not of Canada, where he was born, of the U.S.

Now of course, it's a hilarious fact that pubbies wanted to full-on change the constitution so Ahnold could run (there were even rumbles of it for Kissinger.)

The good Mr. Cruz just wants to interpret "natural born citizen" to mean "born of an American mother."

I mean, now that it's convenient.

PolitiFact | Is Ted Cruz eligible under the Constitution to become president?

It's always been the case, by the way, that even if Obama was born abroad -- which we know he wasn't -- it may not matter. You have to nail down what "natural born" means, and having an American parent has always been respected as proof of citizenship in other cases; and it was "natural-born," because you didn't have to do paperwork, take a test, take the big public ceremonial oath, etc.

But you know... the hypocrisy thing?

Just talking of the technicality ... Obama's mother was not of age at the time of birth.

Just speaking of the technicality if Obama had not been born in the USA ... which he was.

I think the law may be different now ... not sure and I don't feel like checking

speaking of some of these technicalities ... you would think the law would be clarified for the future?

Just saying ... we are a potpourri of citizens now and it will continue further.
I had to look up spelling for potpourri ... I used to be such a good speller ...

I don't know the details of Cruz' birth, but if he was born in Canada, then I'd say he isn't eligible. End of story. I would like the issue to be settled once and for all, or clarified if u will, with respect to what "Natural Born" is. I will say that anyone who is born to US parents who are serving their nation overseas, alla John McLame, should be considered natural born. We shouldn't penalize servicemen and women, for serving their country overseas. The base should be an extension of the US basically. The same would apply to an ambassador giving birth for example. I don't think the Cruz deal was anything like this, so sorry pal. The rules are the rules, and I think this is an important one.

BTW, I think you can see how FOS a lot of people on both sides are with this issue. Obama supporters would support whatever keeps/qualifies Obama to be president, while Cruz supporters would do the same. The very people who probably argued every angle against Obama, are likely to defend Cruz. The people who blindly supported Obama, are likely to push Cruz' ineligibility. Such is partisanism, if that's even a word.

now you know "potpourri" again (and now I do too... I am sure I'd have to check it too.)

This is why I like looking stuff up and it always warms my heart to see others doing so... it makes people smahter. Granted, the spelling of potpourri isn't going to cure what ails society... but clearing out the cobwebs and just looking up the facts sure can help our national level of brainpower. And by cobwebs I also mean the crazy train sources that we all know we look to for "infotainment."

So yay for potpourri

I usually hear "partisanship" but I couldn't swear the "ism" version is definitely a non-word....

I see differences in the extent, prevalence, and absurdity of the two camps, but I think clearly the left will have a lot of fun with the Cruz situation. Right now, they're having fun with the hypocrisy, not coming out and saying "WHERE'S YOUR U.S. BIRTH CERTIFICATE" in earnest.

But how well will that hold up if he does decide he's going to run for president?

Truth is, it would be nice to clarify outside the circus of an election. But the "deciders" would be the Supreme Court, and you'll only have a test case with the next candidacy.

Last time they had nothing to rule on, because there was no reason to think Obama was born abroad (you can't say "cuz it said so on Rush" to the Supreme Court. Okay, maybe Thomas and Alito. But not the whole court.)

So yeah, I can see an opponent making the same whole argument against Cruz, and making the point that hey, this is different -- we know he was born abroad (like McCain).

Given that righties have been for it in the past, I actually don't know why you need to be "natural born," whatever that means. I could see amending that one to "a U.S. citizen for the entirety of his/her adult life." That gets your military kids in, and it allows for people who for all intents and purposes have been Americans their whole adulthood -- who've shown, in other words, that they pick the U.S.

Why's it important that they be born to this or that person or this or that place? People have no control over that. How about judging their patriotism by what they put into it, for those who chose to be American?

A Republican Secretary of State Urges Action on Climate Change

Former Secretary of State George Shultz, who helped stop ozone depletion, describes the importance of energy security and the environment

As Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan, George Shultz helped negotiate the most successful global environmental treaty to date: the Montreal Protocol, which phased out the use of chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone-depleting chemicals. Those chemicals also act as potent greenhouse gases, so the agreement also makes him the negotiator of one of the most effective global climate treaties ever, despite being part of an administration that famously removed solar technology from the White House roof.

Few modern Republican politicians favor such environmental effort, or even believe climate change is happening or that humanity could be primarily responsible for it. In addition, the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives is currently suggesting that the federal budget almost eliminate support for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy and other clean energy efforts from the Department of Energy. Still, Shultz continues to work for what he sees as improvements to U.S. national, economic and environmental security by addressing the growing threat of global warming through his role as chair of the energy policy task force of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

Scientific American sat down with the 92-year-old Schulz to discuss what can be done to combat climate change in the present political environment. The interview was held at his home in the hills above Stanford, which boast solar panels and his electric vehicle?a Nissan LEAF?in the garage.

Editor's Note: David Biello is the host of a forthcoming series on PBS stations, a sequel to the award-winning Beyond the Light Switch. The series, produced by Detroit Public Television, will continue to explore how transformation is coming to how we use and produce electricity, impacting the economy, the environment and national security.

[An edited transcript follows.]

Your long career in government was often focused on protecting the U.S. How will climate change affect national security?
I think in the energy area, we have to be constantly aware of three big objectives. Number one: we have to think of energy as a strategic commodity that is very important to our national security. Number two: we have to recognize that energy is the engine of the economy, so we want inexpensive, reliable, consistent energy. And number three: we have to recognize that energy produces pollutants as it burns, so it affects our environment. It affects the air we breathe; it affects the climate we create. So we have these three issues to keep in mind all the time, and you can't just do one or the other, but you've got to work on them all at the same time.

How is the military addressing the energy and climate challenge?
We see supply trucks blown up as they're going into Afghanistan, and, of course, that means first of all that people are losing their lives. Second of all, the net costs by the time you get the fuel there are astronomical. So you want to create more fuel where it isn't, so you don't have that transportation problem. The answer is to figure out how to create more energy where you use it.
