PCB may ban players from participating in BPL ? Cricket News Update

Reacting furiously to Bangladesh?s decision to not tour Pakistan due to security concerns, the Pakistan Cricket Board has warned that it may now bar national players from participating in the second edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), commencing on January 17, 2013.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board management last month agreed in principle to send its national team to Pakistan for a short limited-overs series ? comprising an ODI and a T20I ? in mid January, albeit pending security clearance. However, the BCB president Nazmul Hassan, on Monday revealed that they were mulling over postponing the proposed itinerary due to security reasons.

Expressing annoyance at the BCB?s decision to put the proposed trip of Pakistan on hold for a second time in nine months, the PCB said that the move has affected the relationships between the two cricket boards, adding that the country will reconsider its bilateral ties with Bangladesh.

The most immediate consequence of this breakdown of relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh will be felt at season two of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

"For the 2013 edition of the BPL, we have to see the commitments and engagements of our players before releasing them for the tournament. To associate the release the Pakistani players with Bangladesh tour to Pakistan does not hold any merit," read a statement released by the PCB on Monday.

The PCB had reportedly used the upcoming BPL as a bargaining chip to convince their Bangladesh counterparts to play a short series in Pakistan. The Pakistan board had not issued No Objection Certificate (NOCs) to their players to play in the T20 league, as they were waiting for an official announcement from the BCB, confirming the proposed the itinerary at the former?s backyard.

Several Pakistan players were however bought at the T20 league's player auction on December 20. The prominent ones among them included Shahid Afridi, Umar Gul, Imran Nazir, Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz?and Mohammad Sami.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Zaka Ashraf also reacted strongly to the BCB?s decision and said that his board will take a principled stand on the BPL, adding that they would not sacrifice their interests for those who do not honour their words.

"We will take a principled stance on the BPL," Ashraf said. "But one thing is sure: our players might not be free as we are making our own arrangements from next year."
