Talk to focus on fatherhood and leadership - Lloydminster Meridian ...

By Murray Crawford

Posted 7 hours ago

Leadership and hard work will be the focus of this year?s annual Mayor?s Prayer Breakfast as actor Robert Amaya will talk about the importance of leadership, as well as authenticity, within family.

Amaya is excited for the trip, as it will be his first time in Canada. The Florida native has been promised his first bison burger or steak on the trip.

But the main reason the actor is coming to the Border City is to speak at the annual Mayor?s Prayer Breakfast this coming Friday.

?I know I will be talking about the importance of family and authenticity,? said Amaya. ?In order to be a good leader, to raise good children or just to be a decent husband or wife you need to know how to be authentic and genuine.?

He pointed specifically to biblical scripture as showing how people don?t need to hold up masks.

?That?s what Jesus came for,? said Amaya. ?He came so we don?t have to wear the masks, we can just rely on his forgiveness.?

Amaya recently had a role in the Christian movie Courageous, a movie about the importance of fatherhood and its impact on families. He said the role reminded him of his father.

?It felt like I was playing my dad, to be quite honest,? said Amaya, adding his father came to the United States when he was about 20 from El Salvador.

?He had little to nothing, basically just the clothes on his back. He worked his tail off, learned the language, got married and had two children. My entire childhood I remember seeing my dad working hard to provide and never ever compromising on his beliefs.?

Amaya grew up in a Christian home and his father was a pastor for a couple of years and a preacher for many years. It was his dad?s hard work that he valued the most.

Another element of scripture that Amaya spoke of is the drive for working hard and that hard work is a good thing.

?Before sin ever came into the picture man was created to work,? said Amaya. ?We were designed to work the garden and keep it.?

But he said the value and results of hard work go beyond religious ideals, and the ability to recognize and understand the importance of hard work should be a universal concept.

?For most Christians working hard is the way of actual worship,? said Amaya. ?It?s a way of thanking God in front of everyone around us of being able to work.?

Growing up Amaya was always creative as he played numerous musical instruments and sang for a while professionally. In 2002 a church friend who was running a small community theatre invited him to play a role in a production he was working on.

?It was the first time I?d ever acted and I got hooked right away,? said Amaya.

Both Amaya and his wife got right into it and they had the opportunity to be a part of productions of well-known plays such as Miss Saigon and Les Miserables.

Eventually the productions went from stage to screen, which Amaya said was a different type of experience. Whereas with a stage production you get one shot and nearly instant feedback, on the screen it can be a year between when an actor finished production and the film premieres.

?I learned a lot about what it is to be a husband and a father in the making of the film,? said Amaya.

The film will influence the speech as Amaya said part of what he portrays in his role is what he will talk about.

?We?re going to want to dive in practical ways of showing leadership,? said Amaya. ?It doesn?t just apply to Christianity, it applies in general. And I believe a lot of the answers we?re seeking for are found through scripture.?

Amaya said is not a whole lot like the character he played in the movie Courageous.

?For starters I don?t have an accent,? said Amaya. ?I once had someone recognize me ask me to get on their phone and talk to their daughter. It took me about 20 minutes to convince her it was actually me because I didn?t have the accent.?

Another element though is that he is an active and boisterous speaker, which he said will mean a lively presentation.

?I?m very passionate about what I talk about, because I believe in what I talk about,? said Amaya. ?I believe very much in my faith and what God has done for me and my family.?

Tickets to the annual Mayor?s Prayer Breakfast cost $35 each or $440 for a reserved table of eight. It will be held at the Lloydminster Stockade Convention Centre with doors opening at 7 a.m. and the event getting underway at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. Tickets are available at Verses in Lloydminster or by calling 780-871-4722.

T-Mobile coaxing unlocked iPhone users to its network with Value Plan push, aggressive in-store service

If, like T-Mobile, you're one of the few major US networks that doesn't carry the iPhone, there's a few stages you have to go through. First comes the heavy-handed hints, then you pull a racy leather number from the wardrobe before declaring that you're fine without it and never wanted the thing anyway. Now it's hit stage four -- throwing caution to the wind and inviting users to bring their unlocked handset into stores and sign up for its $70-a-month (amongst others) unlimited plan anyway. From September 12th, iPhone 4S display units will be rolled out in stores, with helpful sales staff around to swap out your AT&T microSIM for one of its own. You'll also be able to get hold of network-specific apps like myAccount, Visual Voicemail and T-Mobile TV as soon as they're ready. In order to make this marvel possible, it's rolling out 1900MHz HSPA+ access to allow customers access to its "faux-G" service -- which is one way of enticing you away from upgrading to whatever's coming on Wednesday.

How Cats Show Affection | Babble Pets

06 300x225 7 Ways Cats Show Affection Cats love in unusual ways.

It?s one of the biggest things that I love about cats ? that they are not as overtly affectionate as you would expect a dog to be. They have this attitude about them that makes me feel a real kinship with them. You have to earn their love and their trust and when you do ? you feel all the more loved from them.

Where dogs may cover your face with kisses, bark at you affectionately when you walk in the door and wag their tail when you talk ? cats can be a lot more subtle.

From a dead mouse to big dilated eyes ? there are some easy signs that your cat is giving you some love, you just have to know what to look for!

(AP) ? The younger daughter of a British-Iraqi couple slain while vacationing in the French Alps has returned to Britain, while her badly wounded older sister has come out of an artificial coma, authorities said Sunday.

Four-year-old Zeena and 7-year-old Zaina survived a vicious shooting that killed their parents, Saad and Iqbal al-Hilli, as well as a still-unidentified older woman and a French man who apparently happened to be passing by on his bicycle.

French police have been scrambling to hunt down leads since Wednesday's rampage, while relatives of the couple arrived in France to take care of the girls. Authorities say they are probing whether an alleged financial dispute between Saad al-Hilli and his brother Zaid played a role, though the surviving brother has denied any conflict.

Eric Maillaud, the prosecutor for Annecy near where the shootings occurred, told The Associated Press in a text message that Zeena had returned to Britain along with two relatives.

The older daughter, Zaina, was shot in the shoulder and took violent blows to the head during the attack. She underwent two operations and had been placed in a medically induced coma. She has come out of the coma but remains on sedatives and cannot yet talk to investigators, Maillaud wrote Sunday.

Depending on what she remembers, the 7-year-old could prove crucial to the investigation.

Meanwhile, French and British police spent a second day searching the couple's U.K. home in Claygate, a suburb of London.

Surrey Police said the force is supplying resources from its major crime team, which works jointly with Sussex Police, as well as forensic officers, search teams and translators. The force said dozens of British officers are assisting with the French-led investigation but that the number fluctuates depending on needs.

Saad and Iqbal al-Hilli and the two other people killed were each shot twice in the head, along with suffering other wounds. Zeena survived unhurt by hiding under her mother's skirt as some 25 automatic-handgun rounds were fired at the family car.

Plug-in profit woes: Chevy losing $49K per Volt model

Chevy is losing up to $49,000 on every Volt model it builds, two years after the popular plug-in hybrid's launch. Cheap leases and high sales figures may have pushed the Chevy Volt deficit even higher over the summer.

Nearly two years after the introduction of the path-breaking plug-in hybrid, GM is still losing as much as $49,000 on each Volt it builds, according to estimates provided to Reuters by industry analysts and manufacturing experts.

Cheap Volt lease offers meant to drive more customers to Chevy showrooms this summer may have pushed that loss even higher. There are some Americans paying just $5,050 to drive around for two years in a vehicle that cost as much as $89,000 to produce.

And while the loss per vehicle will shrink as more are built and sold, GM is still years away from making money on the Volt, which will soon face new competitors from Ford, Honda and others.

GM's basic problem is that "the Volt is over-engineered and over-priced," said Dennis Virag, president of the Michigan-based Automotive Consulting Group.

And in a sign that there may be a wider market problem, Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi have been struggling to sell their electric and hybrid vehicles, though Toyota's Prius models have been in increasing demand.

GM's quandary is how to increase sales volume so that it can spread its estimated $1.2-billion investment in the Volt over more vehicles while reducing manufacturing and component costs - which will be difficult to bring down until sales increase.

But the Volt's steep $39,995 base price and its complex technology - the car uses expensive lithium-polymer batteries, sophisticated electronics and an electric motor combined with a gasoline engine - have kept many prospective buyers away from Chevy showrooms.

Some are put off by the technical challenges of ownership, mainly related to charging the battery. Plug-in hybrids such as the Volt still take hours to fully charge the batteries - a process that can be speeded up a bit with the installation of a $2,000 commercial-grade charger in the garage.

PLANT SHUTDOWN

The lack of interest in the car has prevented GM from coming close to its early, optimistic sales projections. Discounted leases as low as $199 a month helped propel Volt sales in August to 2,831, pushing year-to-date sales to 13,500, well below the 40,000 cars that GM originally had hoped to sell in 2012.

Out in the trenches, even the cheap leases haven't always been effective.

A Chevrolet dealership that is part of an auto dealer group in Toms River, New Jersey, has sold only one Volt in the last year, said its president Adam Kraushaar. The dealership sells 90 to 100 Chevrolets a month.

The weak sales are forcing GM to idle the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant that makes the Chevrolet Volt for four weeks from September 17, according to plant suppliers and union sources. It is the second time GM has had to call a Volt production halt this year.

GM acknowledges the Volt continues to lose money, and suggests it might not reach break even until the next-generation model is launched in about three years.

"It's true, we're not making money yet" on the Volt, said Doug Parks, GM's vice president of global product programs and the former Volt development chief, in an interview. The car "eventually will make money. As the volume comes up and we get into the Gen 2 car, we're going to turn (the losses) around," Parks said.

"I don't see how General Motors will ever get its money back on that vehicle," countered Sandy Munro, president of Michigan-based Munro & Associates, which performs detailed tear-down analyses of vehicles and components for global manufacturers and the U.S. government.

It currently costs GM "at least" $75,000 to build the Volt, including development costs, Munro said. That's nearly twice the base price of the Volt before a $7,500 federal tax credit provided as part of President Barack Obama's green energy policy.

Other estimates range from $76,000 to $88,000, according to four industry consultants contacted by Reuters. The consultants' companies all have performed work for GM and are familiar with the Volt's development and production. They requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of their auto industry ties.

Parks declined to comment on specific costs related to the Volt. The independent cost estimates obtained by Reuters factor in GM's initial investment in development of the Volt and its key components, as well as new tooling for battery, stamping, assembly and supplier plants - a price tag that totals "a little over" $1 billion, Parks said. Independent estimates put it at $1.2 billion, a figure that does not include sales, marketing and related corporate costs.

Spread out over the 21,500 Volts that GM has sold since the car's introduction in December 2010, the development and tooling costs average just under $56,000 per car. That figure will, of course, come down as more Volts are sold.

The actual cost to build the Volt is estimated to be an additional $20,000 to $32,000 per vehicle, according to Munro and the other industry consultants.

The production cost estimates are considerably higher than those for the Chevrolet Cruze, the Volt's conventional gasoline-engine sister car, which Munro estimates at $12,000 to $15,000 per vehicle.

Production costs typically include such items as parts, material, labor and the cost to run the factory, according to manufacturing expert Ron Harbour, who heads the North American Automotive Practice at Michigan-based consultant Oliver Wyman.
